STMA Student Challenge Results

Congratulations to all STMA Student Challenge participants for their exceptional performance on the 2021 exam! The Student Challenge is presented by SAFE, Founding Partner Hunter Industries, and supporting sponsor Ewing. The challenge was totally on-line this year and the competition included an online exam and an oral presentation. The online exam consisted of multiple choice and identification of turfgrasses, turfgrass weeds, insects, and diseases. The oral presentation required students to work together to find a solution to an issue many sports field managers are experiencing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. They developed plans on how to approach the addition of fall sports to the spring season in a northern climate where soils may still be frozen and snow may still be present early in the season. All of our participating teams did an outstanding job adapting to the online format and developing realistic and professional sports field management plans.

Two two-year teams and six four-year teams competed for $5,000 awards in each division. Winning the two-year competition was University of Maryland Team 2 (Brandon Carbary, Ryan Geils). University of Maryland Team 3 (Jarrett Maynor, Mason Hofmeister, Payton O’Connor) took second place. Winning the four-year competition was University of Maryland Team 1 (Tyler Johnson, Jacob Hess, Ben Word). Penn State University Team 1 (William Covert, Kyle Masters, Ryan Thornton, Ben Rita) took second place and Iowa State University Team 2 (William Stipanovich, Trevor Clawson, Bryce Hoyle) took third place.
