Turf manager

Manages the care, maintenance, and renovation of Yakima County Stadium turf and grounds. Establishes and implements grounds/landscape development and maintenance goals, policies and procedures. Ensures adherence to all relevant regulations, guidelines, and standards for a professional stadium playing surface, with a goal of having the best turf in the summer collegiate West Coast League.

The right candidate takes pride in the artistry of the field, is a perfectionist, and recognizes how important a pristine surface is to the experience of the game – even with difficult conditions.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements plans for the successful maintenance of Yakima County Stadium playing surface and surrounding stadium landscape.
  • Oversees assigned personnel – which will include (1) assistant and a member of the coaching staff assigned to assist with turf management – including assigning work, work allocation, training and problem resolution; evaluating performance and making recommendations for personnel actions; motivating employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  • Working with the general manager of the Yakima Valley Pippins to manage budgets related to stadium turf and grounds.
  • Manages inventory of turf maintenance equipment and supplies.
  • Supervises the conversion and protection of turf during special events.
  • Restores fields damaged by weather, use, or other conditions to a level commensurate with that expected of a top-level professional field.
  • Manages and reviews irrigation systems performance and initiates changes when necessary.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned to help create a memorable experience for fans and players.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Preferred candidates will either have a degree (either 2-year or 4-year) in turf management or a related area of expertise or at least 2 years of turf management experience on athletic fields (preference to baseball).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to identify turf pests and institute turf grass maintenance and treatment.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate the work of technical consultants and/or contractors when necessary to outsource.
  • Knowledge of sports field irrigation systems, specifically as it relates to baseball playing surfaces.
  • Knowledge of pest management guidelines and standards.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Knowledge of reviewing weather patterns and preparing according for bad or inclement weather.
  • Knowledge of standards for professional-quality baseball playing surfaces.
  • Knowledge in how to create and execute a successful winterization plan of the facility
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment, both in receiving instruction from managers and in providing guidance to assistants.
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate turf management equipment, including tractors, mowers, edgers, and other machinery commonly used in turf management
  • Project management skills and the ability to resolve complex problems and issues as it relates to stadium and field operations.

Conditions of Employment

  • Compliance with all commonly accepted “best practices” in turf management.
  • Possession of a valid U.S. state driver’s license is a requirement for this job.
  • Successful candidate must be willing to submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check to ensure that the job requirements will be able to be met.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Work schedule is not typical. It is a need-based job, where the needs are greater preseason and on game days. Candidate must be able to adapt to an unusual work schedule.

Compensation Range

  • This is a seasonal full-time, paid position.
  • Compensation will be based on factors including portfolio, level of experience and education
