The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at West Virginia University is seeking applications for the position of Assistant Turfgrass Manager. Under direction of the Turfgrass Manager, this position shall perform skilled landscape duties as well as coordinate and manage turf operations. This will include the repair and construction of athletic fields, irrigation systems, drainage systems, walkways, etc. This position will operate all athletic department equipment and equipment the athletic department may rent in performing these duties. In addition, this position will manage natural and artificial sport surfaces and grounds for all intercollegiate sports as well as planning for and protecting turf/fields when used for outside events.

In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:

  • Oversee the analysis, planning, preparation, improvements, preventative maintenance, and repair of turf, grounds, and landscape.
  • Assist Turfgrass Manager with turf maintenance, game and practice preparations of all playing surfaces.
  • Identify problems on turfgrass, ground covers, etc. and treat accordingly.
  • Apply insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, fertilizers, and other landscape materials, as needed to maintain an ongoing pest control program.
  • Maintain pesticides inventory and records.  Mowing athletic fields and facilities.
  • Perform landscaping tasks including the seeding, slicing, and aerating of Athletic fields and lawn areas through the operation of tractors, power equipment, etc.
  • Interpret blue prints and follows written or verbal instruction in the performance of Landscape maintenance and construction at the Athletic Fields.
  • Remove snow from Athletic Fields, stadium, sidewalks, steps, roads, and parking lots by trucks, power brooms, and tractors.
  • Perform repairs and services ground maintenance equipment in order to assure proper operation.
  • Equipment services may include but not be limited to weedeaters, mowers, roto-tillers, spreaders, seeders, sodcutters, sweepers, and turf renovators.
  • Assist in the construction and maintenance of landscape structures at the athletic fields. Install landscape timbers, pavers, concrete blocks, and retaining walls in order to ensure proper irrigation and drainage for athletic fields.
  • Fabricate athletic equipment parts and performs repairs on athletic and grounds equipment using torches, welders, drill presses and other shop equipment as required.
  • Assist in the upkeep of maintenance records for trucks and ground equipment.
  • Perform game event set-up support for all home athletic events.
  • Provide technical expertise, information and assistance to employees

Work Hours: 37.5 hours weekly

Length of Assignment: 12 months

Pay Grade: 14


  • Education or training up to 18 months beyond high school, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two (2) years of experience operating grounds equipment, turfgrass operations, or other directly related experience.
  • Knowledge and ability to diagnose turfgrass problems and make necessary treatment, safely, to keep athletic field playable without loss of use.
  • Carpentry skills, understanding measurements, and experience operating power tools.
  • Ability to climb heights over 10 feet.
  • Ability to communicate well utilizing both written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to carry heavy (50 – 75 lbs.) or awkward objects.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, walk, and crawl, sometimes over rough or slippery surfaces.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.
  • Requirements Current State Certification in pest control (4A) ornamental & turf outdoors.
  • Valid drivers license.
