Head Groundskeeper

The West Virginia Power are seeking a motivated individual to fill the position of Head Groundskeeper (HG) at Appalachian Power Park in downtown Charleston, WV!

Appalachian Power Park (APP) is home to the West Virginia Power, Low Class ‘A’ Affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.  APP also plays host to extra events such as the West Virginia High School Baseball State Tournament, the spring West Virginia High School Baseball Showcase, University of Charleston baseball games, the Marshall University vs. West Virginia University rivalry game and other on field events.

The HG reports directly to the General Manager in areas such as, but not limited to: infield skin maintenance, mound/ home plate conditions, sod work, major field projects and weather issues/ tarp usage.  The HG position requires working all West Virginia Power home games and on-field events.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement schedules for the management of employees, field maintenance and game day
  • Manage all field prep including, but not limited to, turf management, fertilization, disease control, edging, mound/ plate prep, warning track maintenance and infield playing surface maintenance
  • Communication with the General Manager, coaching staff and umpires about weather conditions to ensure playability and player safety
  • Communicate with General Manager and front office staff about possible tarp situations
  • Perform post-game field maintenance as necessary
  • Operate and maintain all equipment in a safe manner while keeping equipment in excellent working condition
  • Perform off-season field/turf maintenance programs including winterizing the field
  • Assist the Stadium Operations Manager with projects and task that relate to the cleanliness and betterment of Appalachian Power Park.
  • Hiring, scheduling and training an intern and all game day staff members
  • Develop a working relationship with the Power and visiting coaching staffs to ensure timely pregame routines such as batting practice, early work, infield, etc.
  • Maintain a positive relationship with umpire crews
  • Maintain field to meet all MLB & MiLB field specifications and expectations

Experience/ Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years of baseball related experience
  • Turf Management degree preffered
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong oral communication skills
  • Ability to work all 70 Power home games and all other filed events
  • Flexible work schedule (holidays, nights, early mornings)
  • Ability to work at a quick pace and long hours
  • Ability to operate lawn equipment, forklift & various lifts
  • Obtain a West Virginia pesticide license upon being hired
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
