Director of Grounds

The Director of Grounds will facilitate the day-to-day operations of the athletic grounds unit. The Director of Grounds will ensure all athletic department fields meet the requirements for appearance, safety and usage according to NCAA, Big Ten Conference regulations and other safety policies and procedures. The Director of Grounds will authorize and facilitate the scheduling and usage of all athletic department fields and collaborate with the grounds staff on determining the playability of a field. Will ensure overall appearance of field and other grounds spaces are ready prior to game time. The Director will organize and implement the preparation and maintenance of all athletic fields for all home athletic events, practices, and use by outside entities.

The Director of Grounds will provide supervision to the Assistant Director of Grounds and the Superintendent of Holman Short Game Facility. Delegate responsibilities and develop an effective work force and provide daily direction to the grounds staff based on departmental guidelines. The Director of Grounds will oversee the grounds department budget, payroll, and purchasing. This position will facilitate the maintenance and repair of all equipment, including trucks, mowers, and other grounds accessories; ensure the completion of preventative maintenance on all equipment; coordinate maintenance and repair work with the grounds department and/or outside contractors; the implementation of snow removal plans; supervise planting, pruning, cultivating, seeding, fertilization and irrigation programs of all required turf areas, and maintain records as confirmation that all department equipment meet required safety policies and procedures. Assist with the confirmation of all projects of the grounds department are completed within the budgetary constraints and to perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least three (3) to four (4) years’ sports turf experience.
  • Maryland Pesticide License and Maryland Professional Fertilizer License required.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends and the ability to work in adverse weather conditions are required.

Preferences:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Turfgrass Management, Horticultural or related field.
  • Experience with the operation of agriculture tractors and small engines repair.
  • Knowledge of Division I NCAA/Big Ten Conference policies and procedures preferred.
