Summary of the Position

  • Maintain the Anteater Recreation Center sports fields and grounds areas in a condition of operating excellence to provide a safe and well-kept facility.
  • Perform prescribed maintenance procedures as directed such as: mowing, edging, pruning, hedging, raking, sweeping and weeding.
  • Waters lawns, shrubs, ground cover by use of appropriate manual or automatic systems or hoses when necessary.
  • Inspect for and repair damaged irrigation equipment.
  • Drive tractors, operate power trimmers, blower, trenchers, roto-tillers and other similar pieces of equipment.
  • Uses assigned tools and power equipment in a safe and prescribed manner, avoiding misuse, breakage or loss. Maintains tools, equipment in clean working order.
  • Wash down sidewalks, pool deck, patios, outdoor courts and/or shovel mud and debris from walkways, roads, patios and pool deck in order to keep ARC facilities in safe condition.
  • Fertilizes landscaped area with various spreaders.
  • Load, unload, move and carry grounds related supplies and equipment. Assist other grounds specialty teams.
  • Perform necessary maintenance to sports turf maintenance equipment and tools including proper calibration and adjustment.
  • Assist with preparation for regularly scheduled department and special events including but not limited to field lining and event set up, tear down and clean up.
  • Maintain an acceptable attendance record, punctuality and meet established deadlines.
  • Participate in training sessions and seminars.
  • Maintain a functional awareness of the typical hazards of the work place as well as the special hazards that may be encountered at UCI such as biohazards, radiation, chemicals, etc. Follow established procedures for dealing with such potential hazards.
  • Report accidents on the job. Prepare and submit accident reports.
  • Use appropriate safety devices and equipment to ensure the safety of co-workers and campus community.
  • Assist the Campus Recreation staff with program needs.
  • Provide consistent high level of service to other members of Campus Recreation team, participants, other users and vendors.
  • Provide on-call assistance when necessary.
  • Represent and serve the Campus Recreation Department and the University of California, Irvine consistent with the goals and objectives of these organizations.
  • Continue professional development by staying abreast of research and technological advances in the field.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Required:

Represent and serve the Campus Recreation Department and the University of California, Irvine consistent with the goals and objectives of these organizations.
Knowledge and skill to operate commonly used grounds equipment and tools in a safe manner.
Skill in operating trenchers, tractors, roto-tillers and other commonly used pieces of power driven grounds equipment.
Knowledge and ability to install and maintain irrigation equipment.
Represent and serve the Campus Recreation Department and the University of California, Irvine consistent with the goals and objectives of these organizations.
Ability to effectively work independently or in teams.
Ability to follow through and carry out assignments.
Apply problem solving skills and use sound judgment.
Ability to effectively communicate orally, in writing or electronically.
Knowledge of the proper procedures for safely handling and applying toxic materials such as fertilizers and pesticides.
