Park/General Maintenance Worker II (12701, 12010, 12269, Grade L03)

The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), a six-time National Recreation and Parks Association Gold Medal Award Winner, is seeking three (3) Park/General Maintenance Worker II’s to work within Montgomery County Department of Parks, Southern Parks Division in the Meadowbrook Management Area located in Chevy Chase, MD. The department serves a diverse population of over one million residents in Montgomery County, Maryland, and manages 419 parks on more than 37,000 acres of parkland. The Department has an annual operating budget of over $100 million, a six-year Capital Improvement Program of over $180 million, and a career staff of nearly 800 employees.

Southern Parks Division meets both local and regional leisure needs by providing opportunities for a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities in the most densely populated areas of Montgomery County. Its mission is to provide users with choices of active and passive recreation in parks and facilities that are safe and well-managed; and to apply best practices of stormwater management and stewardship for both undeveloped land, and our build resources located within the natural environment.

Successful candidates will perform general and skilled park maintenance work involving moderate responsibility, complexity, and variety. As well as perform a variety of maintenance tasks such as grass cutting, trash removal, athletic field maintenance, trail maintenance and cleaning and repairing park buildings and snow removal. Responsibilities include operating a variety of equipment (for example, non-CDL trucks, tractors with attachments, and riding mowers). This is park/general maintenance work at the experienced level, involving operation of most equipment, specialized assignments as part of a team, but occasionally may work independently. Successful candidates will perform other related duties as assigned

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT DUTIES:

  • Operates non-CDL riding mowers and tractors with attachments to cut parks, ballfields and brush.
  • Operates non-CDL trucks, truck and trailer combinations, front-end loader, backhoe, dump trucks with snow plows, and trash trucks, using trucks and heavy equipment removing snow, grades fields and other park areas.
  • Hauls materials and equipment.
  • Performs routine safety inspection and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Occasionally performs routine custodial maintenance and repairs to park buildings and structures.
  • Maintains athletic fields, according to established standards. Lays out field (for example, measures, plots and squares corners, plots yard lines, and marks lines). Installs amenities associated with athletic fields. Aerates turf areas.
  • Installs amenities such as signs, grills, picnic tables, fence (chain link and split rail), basketball rims and nets, tennis poles and nets, etc.
  • Performs tree maintenance duties. Operates chain saws. Operates chipping machine to grind brush into mulch. Operates stump grinder to remove tree stumps.
  • Performs routine playground maintenance and performs high frequency safety inspections on area playgrounds. Working as a team and under direction, applies playground wood mulch and makes repairs to playground structures.
  • Aids with transporting supplies and setting up special events. Provides general assistance to park visitors. Assists in monitoring programs and events.
