Park/General Maintenance Leader-CDL (13031, Grade 16)

The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), a six-time National Recreation and Parks Association Gold Medal Award Winner, is seeking a Park/General Maintenance Leader – CDL to work within Montgomery County Department of Parks, Southern Parks Division in the Wheaton Regional Park Management Area located in Wheaton, MD. The department serves a diverse population of over one million residents in Montgomery County, Maryland, and manages 419 parks on more than 37,000 acres of parkland. The Department has an annual operating budget of over $100 million, a six-year Capital Improvement Program of over $180 million, and a career staff of nearly 800 employees.

Southern Parks Division meets both local and regional leisure needs by providing opportunities for a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities in the most densely populated areas of Montgomery County. Its mission is to provide users with choices of active and passive recreation in parks and facilities that are safe and well-managed; and to apply best practices of stormwater management and stewardship for both undeveloped land, and our build resources located within the natural environment.

The successful candidate will have an extreme attention to detail, supervise and direct the day-to-day activities of Park/General Maintenance Workers and seasonal employees within a designated geographical area, which includes diverse park facilities, structures, and turf fields that are found within the park system.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT DUTIES:

  • Under general supervision performs skilled park maintenance work;
  • Leads and directs a team of career and seasonal park maintenance workers in all aspects of general park maintenance;
  • Plans, schedules, assigns, monitors work and provides technical assistance to resolve problems;
  • Leads team to perform tree planting and maintenance activities;
  • Leads team on minor construction projects and building renovations;
  • Maintains and repairs equipment; endorses safe work practices;
  • Inspects work sites and determine best solutions to maintenance trees, grounds, parks, etc.; clears fallen trees from road, trails, bike paths, and buildings, using chain saws, axes, etc.;
  • Responds and resolves complaints of building occupants;
  • Supervises the preparation of building facilities for special uses; endorses safe work practices; maintains and coordinates building repairs, maintenance records, and supervises team work;
  • Drives truck to carry team and equipment to work site;
  • Inspects work quantity and quality of assigned staff;
  • Participates in employee evaluations and counseling;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
