Director, Turf Operations

The Director of Turf Operations is responsible for managing and maintaining the integrity of all natural grass and synthetic turf fields at Sporting Kansas City professional and recreational venues, along with landscaping and ornamental needs. The Director of Turf Operations is charged with being the leading subject matter expert in Agronomy for Sporting Kansas City and providing safe and aesthetically-pleasing fields while remaining fiscally responsible. This position reports to the Vice President, Operations.

Essential Functions

  • Prepare and maintain the annual operating expense budget for Turf Operations for the following Sporting Kansas City facilities:
    • Children’s Mercy Park: Home of Sporting Kansas City (MLS) & Swope Park Rangers (USL) – 1 natural grass professional field
    • Pinnacle: Training Grounds for Sporting Kansas City – 3 natural grass professional fields, 2 synthetic turf fields
    • Swope Soccer Village: Training Grounds for Swope Park Rangers and Sporting KC Academy, Recreational Soccer – 3 natural grass professional fields, 6 synthetic turf fields
    • Wyandotte Sporting Fields: Recreational Soccer – 4 natural grass recreational fields, 8 synthetic turf fields
  • Hire, train and oversee work performed by full time, part time, and game day associates under the direction of this position.
  • Creatively implement sports turf management best practices, such as aerification, top-dressing, fertilizing, integrated pest management, and tarping, to align with scheduled events at Sporting Kansas City facilities.
  • Properly maintain irrigation system; Must have knowledge to operate and repair to manage moisture in playing surfaces to optimal conditions throughout the season
  • Direct all aspects of field heating and irrigation systems, including proper soil temperature and moisture content, winter protection, and maintenance/repair of the system.
  • Ability to create and maintain a safe work environment compliant with governing state and federal authorities.
  • Paint and set up the field matching prescriptions that align with Major League Soccer, and/or other requirements.
  • Ability to perform functions around weather and multiple training schedules.
  • Develop and maintain a strong communication plan with all coaching staff and executive leadership through detailed dashboard reports to track and summarize the attributes that comprise how the field plays and presents.
  • Maintain a safe and pristine work environment for front of house and back of house areas of responsibility via proper storage of chemicals, and cleaning of equipment and work spaces.
  • Represent Sporting Kansas City and its related affiliates in a professional manner at all times.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.

Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Turfgrass Management or other related field required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of turf-related experience, preferably in the soccer industry.
  • Previous experience with multiple turf types in transition zones, including Rye and Bermuda.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare an annual budget.
  • Maintain a Pesticide Applicators License in KS and MO with strong knowledge of all pesticide regulations.
  • Previous experience with underground and above-ground field heating systems preferred.
  • Member and participant of the Sports Turf Managers Association, Certified Sports Field Manager preferred.
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Calendar.
