ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties as assigned

  • Function as a team leader, providing guidance to athletic division workers, trades workers, and other support staff. This involves making work assignments to individuals assigned to the athletic crew to ensure work is completed in a timely fashion, ensuring proper quantity and quality.
  • Inspect completed assignments of all athletic crewmembers and helpers to ensure quality control, ensuring proper safety procedures are used while performing job duties.
  • Receive work orders. Interface with Parks Management to finalize project needs and scope of works.
  • Communicate work schedules and goals to both employees and user groups, creating efficiency and a timely completion of assigned tasks.
  • Perform skilled landscape construction duties including the repair and construction of athletic fields, irrigation systems, drainage systems, walkways, etc.
  • Operate all equipment owned or rented by the Parks and Recreation Department to perform duties.
  • Assigns work schedules to the athletic division in regards to weekend and after business hours events and tournaments.
  • This person is responsible for opening the complex every day of a scheduled travel ball tournament, as well as corresponding with various Tournament Directors throughout the weekend to ensure the end users’ needs are being met in a fashion that is representative of Montgomery County’s high service standards.
  • Responsible for setting the schedule and program of all satellite-controlled sports lighting based on local user groups schedule, tournament schedule etc.
  • Crew Chief will act on behalf of County Parks in making the final decision on the playability of every athletic field per day based on inclement weather or maintenance issue in an effort to minimize personal injury liability and maintain surface integrity.
  • Represent Assistant Director as needed.
  • Keep an up to date inventory of all athletic division tools and supplies, as well as raw materials such as mound and plate clay, infield mix, chalk, lime, fertilizers, pesticides, plant growth regulators, soil conditioners, SAF coat, pre-emergent, post emergent, dye tracker, surfactants etc.
  • Work in coordination with Parks Management in fine tuning a precise, reoccurring twelve month agronomy plan for all athletic field management and replenish supplies as needed to see the plan to completion.
  • Use expertise to assess and diagnose athletic field conditions in order to use preventive maintenance techniques and develop means of remedy.
  • Must be able to interpret data such as soil analysis report, pressure test of water lines, g-max test and PH reading.
  • Coordinate grounds and equipment maintenance schedules; assist Parks Management in developing policies and procedures.
  • Be able to work various hours of the time of day or night as needed including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather conditions including summer heat and winter cold

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma (or GED) and four (4) years related sports field or golf course experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior experience managing Bermuda Turf in the transition zone with multi-field management preferred.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS
Knowledge received from an accredited Turfgrass Management Program of up to 18 months beyond high school; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Two (2) years of experience in general construction or landscape construction, or other experience performing skilled landscape tasks.
  • Certificate from an accredited Turfgrass Management Program highly encouraged
  • Experience with heavy equipment operation, equipment maintenance and experience as a supervisor is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate heavy construction equipment and grounds maintenance equipment, including ability to operate equipment over rough terrain for long periods of time.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring frequent and prolonged exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals, moving parts, noise, and/or extreme outdoor weather conditions or extreme variations of indoor temperatures.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle and equipment with a standard transmission
  • Demonstrate knowledge of electrical systems (i.e. irrigation, scoreboard troubleshooting, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret drawings, blueprints, specifications, and related regulatory codes and requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead work groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate all types of grounds equipment.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Ability to wear a respirator
  • Ability to operate a personal computer.
  • Ability to climb heights up to fifteen feet.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather conditions, occasionally extreme hot or cold weather conditions.
  • Ability to work with multi-craft personnel.
  • Ability to carry heavy (50-100 pounds) or awkward objects.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, crawl, etc. over rough or slippery surfaces.
