Assistant Seasonal Groundskeeper

Assist the Director Grounds by being responsible for repairing and maintaining the playing surface at FirstEnergy Park as a safe, first class baseball field responsible for turf, dirt and water management, timely fertilization, cultural practices, game preparation techniques, short and long-term maintenance planning, and budgeting.

The position is an hourly based position with overtime pay.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Repair and maintain pitching mounds and plate areas
  • Repair and maintain infield skin
  • Repair and maintain warning track area
  • Perform moisture management on infield skin
  • Assist in executing all planning field fertilization programs
  • Assist and perform fertilizer and pesticide applications
  • Assist in ALL tarp pulls
  • Supervise, schedule, mentor and train seasonal part-time game day staff
  • Track grounds department inventory (fungicides, pesticides, fertilizers, etc.).
  •  Oversee and perform work of all common grounds of FirstEnergy Park on a weekly basis
  • Performs gardening and grounds maintenance in caring for turf, shrubs, ground cover, flowers, and hard surfaces by using tools and power equipment.
  • Must be able to endure extreme heat in the summer and cold winters.
  • Mow turf using both walk behind and riding mowers and fertilize turf, shrubs, ground cover, flowerbeds and trees.
  • Operate power equipment such as: rototiller, sod cutter, soil compactor, chain saw, verticutter, hedge trimmer, blowers, mower, tractor, edger, aerial lifts, chain saws, chippers, mini-excavators, skid loaders, hand mowers, rototillers, rollers, lawn sweepers, leaf blowers, and salt spreaders.
  • Cares for and maintains tools.  Maintains and sharpens tools and makes minor repairs on equipment, as needed. Performs routine cleaning and maintenance on gardening and grounds equipment.
  • Performs continuous preventative maintenance on existing irrigation systems, including programming irrigation controls as needed due to weather and/or usage of facilities.
  • Safely operate team-owned vehicles and transport equipment.
  • Weed shrub, ground cover, and flowerbeds. Sweep, rake, remove leaves and trash, and clean drains and gutters. Prune and shape trees and shrubs for improved health. Edge and trim ground cover around buildings, walks, walls, shrubs, trees, and lamp poles.
  • Apply pesticides under the supervision of a licensed pest control operator.
  • Install new irrigation systems where required and repair or replace broken irrigation lines, and valves.
  • Ability to work weekends and overtime when required.

Requirements: Minimum qualifications include one year related experience in sports turf management, preferably baseball maintenance.

Physical Demands: Ability to do heavy lifting (up to 70 lbs.). Must have the ability to maneuver quickly and easily under changeable situations. Ability to quickly pull tarps and other related equipment on and off field. Ability to safely operate lightweight vehicles.
