Head Groundskeeper

The Daytona Tortugas are currently seeking a Head Groundskeeper.  The Tortugas take pride in playing at Historic Jackie Robinson Ballpark and hosting almost 100 baseball games annually.  The Tortugas are located in Downtown Daytona Beach, FL and play host to the High-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. Jackie Robinson Ballpark also plays home to Bethune Cookman University. The ideal candidate is passionate about turf maintenance, hard working, and highly motivated to delivering one of the best playing surfaces in the Florida State League.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the oversight of all field maintenance at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
  • Prepare playing surface for all practices and games including the preparation of infield, mound, plate and bullpens.
  • Responsible for general maintenance on all equipment and to ensure that all tools and equipment is in good condition to meet the objectives of the job.
  • Repair irrigation when needed to ensure all fertilization and irrigation programs are completed.
  • Oversee the hiring, training and development of Grounds Crew. Oversee a field staff of five seasonal employees.
  • Maintain all auxiliary grass areas of Jackie Robinson Ballpark to ensure a first-class appearance throughout the facility.
  • Help prepare for special events, including baseball tournaments, concerts, charity runs and festivals.  Approximately 150 events hosted at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. About 100 of them will have participation on the playing surface.
  • Build relationships with all necessary vendors and contracts in order to adhere to annual budget for all work needed to be done to maintain a top playing surface.
  • Assist with various stadium maintenance projects as needed during the off-season.  Work closely with the Director of Stadium Operations.
  • Communication with VP Baseball Operations and Team Field Manager on playing field conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2-3 years of experience with a degree in turf management or bachelor’s degree in a related field.  Previous baseball experience is a must.
  • This position requires someone to work long hours at certain periods over the year which includes weekends, holidays.  Must work well in a fast- paced environment.
