Qualified Applicants: A Bachelor’s Degree in Turf Management, Agronomy or related field is preferred. Associate’s degree will be considered with demonstrated experience and track record. Experience with Bermuda grass fields (Tifway 419) preferred.

The Ballpark: Spirit Communications Park is a $37 million multi-use sports and entertainment venue in the heart of downtown Columbia, South Carolina. Spirit Communications Park is the home ballpark for the Columbia Fireflies, the Class-A affiliate of the New York Mets. Designed for baseball, concerts, soccer, football and a host of other activities, the venue will seat approximately 9,000 for sporting events and up to 15,000 for major outdoor concerts. With 16 luxury suites and a 7,000 square-foot Club Lounge, Spirit Communications Park can also host everything from business meetings to wedding receptions, and everything in between. The venue is open 365 days a year and will serve as a public park, with the 365-degree concourse representing 1/3 of a mile for walkers and joggers. Spirit Communications Park was voted 2018 South Atlantic League Field of the Year. Opening Day is Thursday, April 4, 2019.

Job Summary: The Assistant Groundskeeper is responsible for repairing and maintaining the Spirit Communications Park playing surface and its surrounding components as a safe, first-class baseball field by performing daily turf, dirt and water management, game preparation and short and long-term maintenance planning. The Assistant Groundskeeper will also assist the Operations Department in the offseason.

* Assist in the maintenance and repair of the playing field that includes, but is not limited to turf (mowing, edging, fertilizing, aerating, top-dressing, discovery/control of weeds, insects, and diseases) and dirt (infield skin, baselines, home plate, pitcher’s mound, bullpens, warning track) management
* Help to lead game staff with tasks and assignments
* Oversee the preparation of the field for pre-game batting practice by setting up cage, screens, mats, and protective field covers
* Help to manage the preparation of the playing field for game use by grooming field, chalking base path foul lines, painting outfield foul lines and coaches boxes
* Partially responsible for vehicle and equipment maintenance
* Participate in front office programs and projects
* Assisting in maintaining field year-round
* Help identify any issues on the field or grounds
* Coordinate field set up for amateur baseball games, soccer, football, concerts, and any other special events taking place on the playing surface
* Assist in planning and decision making at Spirit Communications Park
* Other duties as assigned by Head Groundskeeper, in-season and off-season
