Overview:  Under general direction of the Grounds Manager the Athletic Fields Specialist oversees the daily maintenance of all Augustana athletic playing surfaces, turf areas, and general grounds. During winter months, the incumbent will be assigned to Groundskeeper duties to assist with overall campus maintenance and snow removal. This position requires specialized knowledge of both natural and synthetic athletic turf maintenance.

Primary Duties:

  • Maintains natural and synthetic fields throughout the Athletic Department. Re-grooming/re-building(when necessary) pitcher’s mound (including clay repair), making soil amendments, dragging and grooming infield areas, inspecting and maintaining proper playing field levels to minimize lip, and applying appropriate materials when needed
  • Groom synthetic fields to include top dressing and raking rubber infill as needed.
  • Through understanding and working knowledge of the design, install and maintenance of a large scale irrigation systems. Completes irrigation inspections and scheduling on computerized controllers.
  • Apply herbicide, plant protectant, and fertility agents throughout facilities and surrounding common areas.
  • Perform turf maintenance operations on all campus turf. Including but not limited to; mowing, trimming, aerating, fertilizing and weed control.
  • Assists groundskeepers in maintaining campus grounds. Assist in facility preparation and cleanup for departmental events.
  • Collect and dispose of outdoor trash and recyclables.
  • Keeps appropriate inventory of supplies and oversees scheduled maintenance of equipment.
  • Utilizes equipment and chemicals in a safe and sensible manner, consistent with training and/or manufacturers recommendations.
  • Operates large motorized equipment such as 40 HP tractor, skid steer, all-terrain vehicle, forklifts, ariel lifts, and all applicable attachments to complete routine job assignments.
  • Ensures that customers receive quality service and timely response to requests.
  • Identifies, evaluates and communicates issues that require additional attention and directs the process to ensure a timely resolution.

Additional Duties:

  • Works with other campus community members and leaders on special projects
  • Oversees student workers as assigned ensuring high productivity and professional behavior
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills & Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience working on University, School District, golf course or professional level sports fields/turf maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability to calculate fertilizer, and chemical application rates.
  • Experience operating specialized turf equipment such as sprayers, spreaders, aerators, mowers, blowers, edgers or similar.
  • Experience maintaining clay surfaces for baseball and/or softball.
    Knowledge of synthetic turf maintenance a plus.
  • Flexible attitude and willingness to perform all aspects of the job in high workload times, emergencies, and/or staffing shortages.
  • Skill in using a computer to communicate and complete work tasks. Ability to work with limited supervision and work effectively independently and as part of a team.
  • Currently, possess State of IL Pesticide License or ability to acquire within 90 days of hire.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean MVR required

Education:  High School Diploma or GED and 3-5 years of experience in athletic field/turf maintenance required. Degree or certification in Turf Management, Sports Field Management, or related field strongly preferred.

Work Environment:  Primarily, this job operates outdoors. Exposure to extreme heat and cold weather conditions are expected.

Work Hours: This position is considered essential to the operations of the college. Therefore even when the college is closed due to severe weather this incumbent is expected to report to work. The expectation is that this person is available and committed to working with very short notice at all times of the day and night. On-call rotation with irregular hours will be required through varying times of the year to meet operational demands

Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Must be able to lift 100 pounds on a regular basis.  Also required is the ability to push and pull heavy machinery on a frequent basis. The ability to listen, hear, speak, read, write, bend, stoop, and stand for long periods of time. Must possess finger and hand dexterity for using small tools and equipment. This position requires frequent walking, climbing of stairs and occasional work on ladders. Company purchased uniform and steel-toed foot protection required.

Expected hours of work:  7am-3:30pm, Monday – Friday

Travel:
Extensive on-campus travel (3-mile radius) is to be expected as this person commutes to several on-campus locations throughout the day.
