Appoquinimink School District is seeking an experienced Sports Turf/Grass Field Manager to improve upon and maintain ASD’s current athletic complexes both natural grass and synthetic fields.  All District locations will be included with the responsibility of this position, including grounds maintenance.

Essential Functions:

  • Maintain condition and appearance of all natural grass and synthetic turf athletic fields, intramural fields and stadiums including facility landscaped areas.
  • Prepare fields and stadiums for DIAA sports activities, by lining, marking, turf maintenance, and fertilization.
  • Prepare soil for planting, manage irrigation schedules and repair as wells as turf wear management both natural grass and synthetic.
  • On natural grass fields properly apply all fertilizer mixtures and calibrations to efficiently apply fertilizers/fungicides/insecticides.
  • Rebuild Baseball pitching mounds and laser grade infields.
  • Plan, organize, prioritize, direct, schedule and assign work. Coordinate with contractors as directed.
  • Meet regularly with the Director of Operations to review upcoming requirements and report on outstanding and completed projects.
  • Assess the requirements of the grounds department and assist the Director of Operations in the preparation of the budget for supplies and equipment.
  • Serve as the district’s trainer for grounds employees so they may assist in maintaining athletic fields, grounds, and play areas for all users of district facilities including mowing, seeding, fertilizing, irrigating, removing leaves and rubbish, and applying pesticides.
  • Cut grass; trim/prune trees and shrubbery; maintain trails, entrances and flower beds or assign to other grounds keepers to maintain a pleasant appearance. Establish a frequency schedule for this work.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of the field house & outdoor restroom facilities on a daily basis during fall, winter and spring seasons.
  • Direct and perform regular inspection, care and maintenance of all athletic areas and bleachers.
  • Maintain, clean, adjust, repair and properly store all athletic and grounds equipment, vehicles and district property.
  • Perform all additional duties at District locations as assigned by the Director of Operations.

Travel Requirements:
Frequent travel between schools is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of hand and power tools.Skilled in areas of irrigation, weed control and fertilization.
  • Operate large equipment such as mowers, backhoe and bobcat.


  • Minimum 5 years Sports Turf/Field Management.
  • State of Delaware Driver’s license.
  • State of Delaware Chemical Applicators License.

Physical Qualifications:

  • Ability to work in extreme heat and cold.
  • Must be able to climb ladder.
  • Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds.
