The Foundation for Safer Athletic Fields for Everyone (SAFE)
The SAFE Foundation was established in 2000 to fund research, educational programs and scholarships geared to the sports field profession. SAFE is the charitable organization of the nation’s only association for the sports field management industry – the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA). SAFE generates funding for these programs through member and industry donations, grants, an annual golf tournament, auctions and raffles. SAFE recently shifted its focus to educational outreach and is in the process of developing fundraising strategies and expanding its Board of Directors t help it achieve its new mission and vision.
SAFE’s Vision:
• Contribute to the growth and enjoyment of sports
• Add to the safety and performance of athletes
• Enrich community health and interaction
• Contribute to the sustainability of communities’ green space
SAFE continues to fund scholarships and the student challenge as well as its new efforts in educational outreach. Since 2003, it has funded $112,250 in pure scholarship and grant dollars representing 101 recipients during this time. SAFE also has provided more than $50,000 in travel assistance to this group. SAFE awards $8,000 annually to the two top winning Student Challenge teams who compete at the annual conference. It supports STMA educational materials and with STMA has funded two DVDs and dozens of educational bulletins.
