A New Grant to Honor Gary Vanden Berg, CSFM

The SAFE Foundation announces the introduction and funding of the inaugural Gary Vanden Berg Internship Grant. This grant honors Gary Vanden Berg, CSFM, for his contributions to the industry in promoting internships. Gary is the Director of Grounds for the Milwaukee Brewers and his commitment to creating an excellent learning experience for interns is legendary throughout the MLB and the entire sports turf industry.

This grant will be awarded in late fall each year for an internship completed the during the spring or summer of that year. STMA Student Members in good standing who are currently enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours or were enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours in the semester just prior to the internship are eligible to submit for the $1,000 grant. Thus, recent graduates who completed an internship after graduation are eligible. The grant will be awarded later this fall and the winner introduced at the 2012 STMA Annual Conference in Long Beach in January.

The grant is intended to offset the costs a student may have incurred while interning including, but not limited to, transportation, lodging, and food, or as a subsidy to wages. In addition to receiving the $1,000 grant, the winner will also receive a full conference registration and three night's lodging at the next STMA National Conference and Exhibition.

The deadline to submit is Oct. 15. To apply, click here. If you are interested in making a donation in Gary's honor to help fund this grant for future years, contact Kim Heck, 800-323-3875.

It has been a long time coming, but the STMA is unveiling a new website next month in conjunction with its new membership management system. Our current website and membership management systems are fully integrated and our new systems will also be seamless to our members. This is important because members need access to special STMA benefits unavailable to non-members.

You will still log in at to access the Members-Only area and your individual home page. However, that process will be much simpler! Your user name will be your email address. Your password will remain the same, unless it is less than six characters. If it is less than six characters, you will be contacted by staff with an adjustment so you can log in and then change your password to whatever you wish. And, any member can easily change their password after logging in for the first time.

Our new website will provide us the ability to host videos and webcasts, offer more interactive education, and communicate better with you! We're still learning our new systems so we ask for your patience. If you experience any glitches, please contact us at 800-323-3875 or at

Conference Brochure - On Your Desk this Month!

Opportunity awaits you in Long Beach! You will find everything you need to know about the 2012 Annual Conference and Exhibition in the brochure. The printed edition will arrive by the end of the month to your inbox and the digital brochure will be available on line mid-month.

The educational program has an unprecedented number of organizations awarding CEUs and California Pesticide Recertification Credits. Providing a Trip Report can help to justify your attendance at future conferences.

On line registration opens on October 5, and the low, early-bird price of $375 for the full conference is available until Dec. 15. Again this year, STMA is offering discounts for the second person from the same facility to attend, and has special one-day education and trade show packages.

Congratulations goes to the Conference Education Committee chaired by Pam Sherratt, the Conference Tours Committee chaired by Jeff Salmond, CSFM, and the Conference Exhibition Committee co-chaired by Chad Price, CSFM, CFB and Rene Asprion, for developing an excellent event in Long Beach.

Bylaws to Add Retired Membership Category

The STMA Board of Directors has approved a change to the STMA Bylaws to be brought to the membership for a vote later this fall: the addition of a new Retired category of membership.

The new Retired category is designed to be inclusive and does not rely on age as a criterion. It offers membership at $50 to a member who is retiring and is no longer seeking full time employment within the scope of activities of STMA's current membership categories. The category will be non-voting and a person seeking this category must have been a member of STMA for at least five years.

The Membership Committee made the recommendation to add this category so that STMA can keep these experienced members involved, and the Bylaws Committee developed the language for the Bylaws earlier this spring.

If approved by the membership, the category will be available Jan. 1, 2012.
