STMA’s Turfgrass Science Curriculum

STMA's Turfgrass Science Curriculum was developed to introduce students to the turfgrass industry. The lessons build a solid foundation in the science and practices of turfgrass management so students can successfully care for a turfgrass surface. The curriculum is broken into 5 units:

Unit 1: Introduction to Turfgrass Science
Unit 1 introduces students to the community, environmental, and economic benefits of turfgrass. Students are also introduced to the various career opportunities available in the turfgrass industry.

Unit 2: Turfgrass Growth & Development, Anatomy, and Identification
Unit 2 discusses turfgrass germination and growth. Activities are provided to assist students with understanding anatomical features and how to use those features to correctly identify turfgrass species. Adaptations and correct use of turfgrass species is also covered.

Unit 3: Turfgrass Soils
Unit 3 focuses on the importance of soil properties and the soil issues most commonly encountered in turfgrass management. Students are guided through activities to understand soil texture, drainage, and compaction and how they influence turfgrass health.

Unit 4: Turfgrass Cultural Practices
Unit 4 is divided by the cultural practices necessary to maintain healthy turfgrass systems. Mowing, fertilization, irrigation, aeration practices, and pest management are all covered in-depth to help students understand why each practice is essential for the health and longevity of turfgrass surfaces.

Unit 5: Turfgrass Establishment
Unit 5 culminates by bringing together information from the previous units and challenging students to think about what it takes to establish and maintain a turfgrass surface successfully. Successful establishment cannot take place without a firm understanding of turfgrass species and adaptations, soil requirements, and essential cultural practices.
