Our Field of the Year Award application is now available! STMA recognizes that you make personal and professional contributions to our industry and to the organization you serve. Therefore, the association distinguishes fields from around the country with the annual “Field of the Year” Program.  Through our Field of the Year Program we are able to greatly further one main element of our mission: To gain acknowledgement for the professionalism of our members.
This year, based on the results of the judging, the following awards will be presented at the STMA Annual Awards Banquet, Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, in San Antonio, Texas. In addition to being featured in SportsTurf Magazine winning fields will also receive:

  • A plaque recognizing the field and the Sports Turf Manager
  • Registration to the STMA Conference
  • Three nights of lodging, excluding incidentals, at the STMA Conference
  • STMA signature apparel for the winning sports turf manager and their crew

Though our fond memories of Daytona Beach and STMA's 24th Annual Conference & Exhibition are still fresh, it's never too early to start thinking of 2014! Next year, STMA will visit one of the country's most vibrant up-and-coming cultural centers: San Antonio, Texas. Home to the historic Alamo and world-renowned Riverwalk, this unique community offers a wealth of sights and sounds for all to enjoy.
The Grand Hyatt Hotel, the conference host hotel, is connected to the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The Convention Center is the site of the education and trade show. We've negotiated a special $165 room rate. Look for more information soon on reserving your hotel room.

A stop in San Antonio would not be complete without a visit to the world-famous Riverwalk, which opened a new 1.3 mile extension since STMA was there in 2007. In 2010, Travel + Leisure magazine named it one of "America's Coolest River Walks" saying "This granddaddy of river walks charms with four miles of cypress-lined cobble-and-flagstone paths along both sides of the narrow San Antonio River. Locals and visitors cool off on the horseshoe-shaped loop downtown, meandering past trendy shops and stopping at hot spots like Boudro's for guacamole prepared tableside." A number of varied shopping and cultural events abound; the downtown area surrounds the convention center and the Alamo is directly adjacent.
We hope to see you in San Antonio, Jan. 21-24, 2014, for STMA's 25th Annual Conference & Exhibition!

Did you know a broken or missing sprinkler head could waste as much as 25,000 gallons of water and more than $90 over a six-month irrigation season? Now is the perfect time to spruce up your sprinkler systems to ensure efficiency before ramping up outdoor watering. To help do so, the Environmental Protection Agency's WaterSense program has developed new tips and tools to educate customers about the importance of maintaining irrigation systems to promote healthy landscapes and reduce water waste during the month of May. Organic fertilizers have increased in popularity due to the belief they are more environmentally sound than synthetic fertilizers. However, most organic fertilizers contain phosphorus in addition to nitrogen, so use may be affected in states that control phosphorus applications. Click here to read about a study completed at Washington State University that investigates how organic fertilizer sources affect soil test phosphorus and phosphorus saturation in a native soil and a sand-based root zone mixture under field conditions.
