Research in Tennessee and Georgia evaluated water-based and wettable powder dithiopyr formulations and quinclorac for smooth crabgrass control in bermudagrass. Treatments were applied at the pre-emergence, one- to two-leaf, one- to two-tiller, and greater than three-tiller stages of growth.

The 2012 STMA Call for Presentations is now open!

Share your expertise by being a presenter at the 2012 STMA Conference and Exhibition. The conference will be held in Long Beach, California from January 10-14. Presenting at the conference is a great way to share research and experiences and also increase your visibility within the sports turf management profession.

Please complete and submit all the required materials on the online form by the March 31, 2011 deadline. Submittals will be reviewed by the STMA Conference Education Committee by May 15, 2011. STMA Regional Conference Heads to Volunteer Country!

STMA will be hosting the 2011 Regional Conference, June 15-16 in Knoxville, Tenn. The Tennessee Valley, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia Chapters are participating as co-hosts of this event. The STMA Regional Conference Steering Committee is still finalizing the educational program, but it will include tours of the University of Tennessee athletic facilities, a tour of the University's new Center for Athletic Field Safety, an exhibition, classroom education and a night out at the ballpark watching the Tennessee Smokies take on the Chattanooga Lookouts on Wednesday evening.

Future Regional Conference Locations Announced

STMA has secured locations for the 2012-2014 Regional Conferences. In the summer of 2012, the Association comes back to the Midwest in Cincinnati, Ohio; the 2013 event travels west to Provo, Utah; the Baltimore, Md. area will be the site of the 2014 STMA Regional Conference.

This rotation allows those who may not be able to make it the national conference each year to take advantage of the national level education put on by fellow members at these yearly events. The exact dates of these events will be announced later in 2011, so keep checking your inbox and for more information.

Committees Begin Work

Those who volunteered for an STMA committee are being notified during the next two weeks. If you signed up for a committee, but have not heard about your service by March 11, please email headquarters at or call 800-323-3875.

Attention Commercial Members - Apply for the 2012 STMA Innovative Awards

After a very successful inaugural year for the Innovative Awards, STMA will begin accepting applications for the 2012 STMA Innovative Awards later this spring. The Innovative Awards Program recognizes those companies that have developed a product, service or technology that substantially enhances the effectiveness of the Sports Turf Manager. The innovation could also have the intent to make playing surfaces safer and more playable for athletes.

Who is Eligible:
   • any STMA Commercial member who is exhibiting at the upcoming STMA Annual Conference and Exhibition
      - the company must display the product, service or technology at the STMA Exhibition.
   • one submittal per company is allowed annually

To Qualify for the award, the product, equipment, service or technology must:
   • have been introduced for sale between the close of the current year's STMA show (01/14/11) and the close of next year's STMA show (01/13/12)
   • substantially enhance the effectiveness of the Sports Turf Manager and/or make the surfaces safer and more playable for athletes 

Due Date:
   • application is due Oct. 1, 2011

To Submit:
   • all submittals must be made electronically through a form provided by STMA (it will be publicized to Commercial Members when the form is available)
   • videos, photos and other media may be linked to the form for a comprehensive submittal

Selection Process:
   • a panel of STMA non-commercial members representing all categories of membership will judge the entries
   • each year, there may be one or more winners
   • the panel of judges will make an award to those companies whose service, product, technology or equipment thoroughly meets the definition of innovative as described

Notification and Recognition:
   • winner(s) will be kept confidential and announced at the 2012 annual conference and exhibition 
   • STMA will recognize the winner(s) with:
      - a special announcement during the trade show 
      - recognition at STMA's Annual Awards Banquet at the 2012 STMA Conference and Exhibition
      - a special logo that the company can use in the promotion of the winning product, service, technology or equipment 
      - publicity via STMA communication vehicles and conference press releases
      - special signage at the winner(s) booth(s) in the STMA Exhibition

The 2011 STMA Innovative Awards were first presented at this year's STMA Conference and Exhibition in Austin to Barenbrug USA, Bush Sports Turf and SportsEdge, Inc.
