NEWS YOU CAN USE
Mark Jan. 16 – 19, 2008, on your calendars for the STMA Annual Conference and Exhibition, which will be held in Phoenix, Ariz. The host hotel is the Hyatt Regency, which is directly across the street from the Phoenix Civic Plaza, the convention center. The Hyatt is offering accommodations for $167 – single or double occupancy (just $2.00 more than the rate STMA offered in 2005!) Look for information this summer on booking your accommodations at this special rate.
Golfers 'Hit the Green' for SAFE
A huge ‘thank-you’ to the golfers who donated their tournament fees to the SAFE Foundation, STMA’s charitable arm. Each year Jacobsen, A Textron Company, sponsors the SAFE golf tournament and donates all registration fees to The Foundation. This year, the tournament in San Antonio was cancelled due to the Quarry Golf Club’s closure from the ice storm. SAFE Chairman of the Board Boyd Montgomery, CSFM, invited golfers to donate their registration fees to SAFE and more than half of the golfers donated all or a portion of their golf fees. Even more inspiring is the commitment of Jacobsen to The Foundation. They agreed to a 50 percent match for each dollar donated by the golfers. Look for a complete list of donors in the April issue of SportsTurf.
SAFE is the sole funding source for student scholarships and a major co-contributor to the Student Challenge with Hunter Industries.
Any golfer who has not contacted STMA and wishes to donate his/her tournament fee to SAFE, please contact headquarters by March 12, phone 800-323-3875, or at STMAinfo@sportsturfmanager.org.
Membership Renewal Draws to a Close
Final membership renewal notices are in the mail. For those who do not renew by March 31, your membership will no longer be valid and your access to the STMA member benefits will expire on that date. For uninterrupted service, please renew now, online, or call STMA headquarters, ph. 800-323-3875.
Thanks for the Memories!
The SAFE live and silent auctions were a success in creating great memories for those who purchased coveted sports memorabilia. A big thank-you must also go to those who donated these products and services for the auction. Due to your generosity, the auctions raised more than $6,000 for The SAFE Foundation. This money will be used to continue to build our scholarship program, provide educational resources to STMA members and develop sports field specific research. STMA and SAFE thanks auctioneer Tom Curran for organizing and conducting these vital events!
Now is a great time to begin organizing your donations for Phoenix. Remember — we accept almost anything you or your organization has to offer. Donations can include team gear, logo items such as shirts, hats, jackets, autographed baseballs and footballs, and vendor products. Ship your items to headquarters at 805 New Hampshire, Ste. E, Lawrence, KS 66044 or bring them with you to Phoenix.
Conduct Spring Training with Your Crew
STMA invites you and your crew to join Washington Nationals Head Groundskeeper Larry Divito (left) and Seattle Mariners Head Groundskeeper Bob Christofferson (right) in a 27-minute video as they walk you through how to correctly rebuild your facility's pitchers mound and maintain it at a Major League level. This video is an excellent teaching tool for your crew. Click here for the order form or call STMA Headquarters at (800) 323-3875 for information on ordering Baseball Mound Reconstruction: A Professional Approach for only $15.
BONUS - On the same DVD get Home Plate Maintenance: A Professional Approach, an 8 minute instructional video filled with tips for maintaining your home plate area.
CSFM Testing is Coming to Your Area
The STMA certification exam can be taken at your convenience in your local area. Once you qualify for the exam, just let headquarters know where and when you would like to take the test. We require that you find a proctor who will agree to hand out each section of the exam, collect the completed sections and send them to STMA headquarters for grading.
To qualify to take the exam, you must have achieved 40 combined education and experience points, fill out the exam application and then schedule your test.
If you have a turf related bachelor’s degree and have been a sports turf manager for as few as four years, you qualify to take the test. Even if you do not have a degree, you can qualify to take the test if you have spent seven years as a sports turf manager. Other combinations of education and experience qualify, so call headquarters at 800-323-3875 to determine if you are eligible.
