Renowned Scientist to Present in Austin

Dr. James Beard, an esteemed teacher, mentor, and researcher and an internationally recognized leader in the field of turfgrass science, will speak at the 2011 STMA Conference. He will provide his insight into the evolution of sports turf and his predictions for the future during the STMA General Session on Thurs., Jan. 13, 2011.

Beard has served as technical advisor to turfgrass organizations across the country and around the world.  He has authored hundreds of scientific papers and articles, five books and a laboratory manual, in collaboration with his wife, Harriet. His classic Turfgrass: Science and Culture, published in 1973 and still in print, continues as the only true treatise ever written regarding turfgrass science. His Turf Management for Golf Courses, first released in 1982 and revised in 2002, remains the best-selling reference work in the field. Beard also published Beard's Turfgrass Encyclopedia for Golf Courses - Grounds - Lawns - Sports Fields with the Michigan State University (MSU). He was instrumental in creating the Noer Collection at MSU and subsequently has donated his own collection, The Beard Collection, making MSU the strongest public repository of turfgrass literature in the world.

A 1957 graduate of Ohio State in agronomy, Dr. James Beard is president and chief scientist of the International Sports Turf Institute Inc., and professor emeritus of Turfgrass Science at Texas A&M University.
